Elora’s First Day of School

On Elora’s first day of school we took some pictures of Elora and Marion in their cute matching outfits that Nana bought for the girls.

It turns out it is really hard to get Marion to hold still for pictures…

But Elora was really excited about school and was a good sport about taking tons of pictures.

So a few days before school started, Elora was running to come down the stairs and ran into a wall. With her head. And got a really deep cut above her eyebrow. Of course I was home alone, it was a Sunday and bedtime for the little kids… so when I saw how deep it was I thought, “Is she going to need stitches?” Luckily we live in a small town where half my friends are EMTs, so I called a friend to come look at Elora’s head. We ended up just bandaging it with a butterfly bandage. Elora’s big concern? “Will it still hurt on my first day of school?!?!”

So that is why she has a bandage on her head. On her first day she woke up before everyone, came downstairs fully dressed and excitedly put on her backpack. This kid has been waiting to go to school for two years now. I am not sure I was ready, but she was so happy.

Most of the kids in our town take the bus, but Elora asked me to drive her to school (as if I wouldn’t on her first day of Kindergarten!). The funny part is she loved school so much that she cried when she didn’t get to take the bus home with the other kids!!!!

She found her name by her backpack/coat hook.

Found her name on the table, and promptly went to the bookshelf to get out a story.

Oliver also enjoyed exploring the kindergarten room, and was VERY disappointed when it was time to leave. On the way home we drove past the swimming pool where he took lessons, and he said: “I go to the pool?”
Me: “No, the pool is not open today.”
Oliver: “Why?”
Me: “Because all the kids are in school.”
Oliver: “Without me? Kids go to school without me?!?!?”
So sad. So we got home and headed straight over to his friend Maddie’s house to play since she also had to watch all her siblings go to school without her. But Oliver still asks where Elora is every day.

So a lot of mom’s cried on the first day of sending their kids to kindergarten. I had felt sad prior to school starting, but Elora was so excited that I wasn’t sad on the first day. The second day of school Elora informed me she was going to ride the bus with all the other kids. For some reason putting her on that big school bus in the morning was so much harder than sending her to school the first day! In our town all the kids, K-12 ride the same bus. Scary. But luckily since I live in a small town, I know all the kids who ride the bus, and there was already a little girl Elora knew on the bus that day, so they sat together. I can’t believe she is so grown up. And she LOVES school.

Elora had a school assignment last week to make a doll that looks like her. I was allowed to help, but she really wanted to do it herself. She cut it out almost completely on her own, colored everything, picked the fabrics she wanted, and she let me tie the bow and glue on the hair. It was fun to work with her – and fun to see her creation!
